Brawl Brothers is the second game in Jaleco's Rushing Beat series of SNES-exclusive best 'em ups, and it is the sequel of the game released in the west as Rival Turf!
Brawl Brothers is still in nearly every way a clone of Streets of Rage or Final Fight, but it represents a significant jump in quality over its predecessor in terms of its graphics and playability.
Three new combatants, including a ninja, a martial artist, and a female wrestler join Jack (Hack) and Oozie (Slash) in this new fight. The action is mostly what you'd expect from a game of its type - there is plenty of walking right and punching, but Jaleco does attempt to inject some variety into the formula by adding in a few maze-style stages, using player characters as bosses to be recruited, and it brings back "angry mode" from Rival Turf! that grants you a few moments of increased strength after taking several hits in succession. Given how difficult the game can be, I'd recommend playing with the angry mode option enabled.
Like Final Fight and Streets of Rage, each character has a wide range of comparable moves but they vary greatly in terms of power and speed, so the game feels very different depending on who you choose to play as.
Brawl Brothers, like Rival Turf!, never threatens to steal the beat 'em up crown from the genre classics, but it is an entertaining, well crafted game that comfortably sits among the better SNES beat 'em ups.
