Graphics
Well I guess the most noticeable thing about Old Man’s Journey is the watercolour art style. I have to say, through out the entire game it stays on point. The textures are fantastic, especially the little touches to things like vans doors or the rust on a boat. The character design is stylised and rather charming, it’s got that slightly European fashion style of illustration, which works fantastically with the water colours. It all really works with the story and music to great such a good atmosphere to the game.
Sound
Well what can I say about the sound, the music is brilliant, super charming and immersive. I was actually listening to the sound track on Bandcamp while I was creating the titles and thumbnail for this video. I think it’s really reminiscent of Studio Ghibili films when they are aiming for that European flavour. There are a few little Easter eggs throughout the game, like bells on buildings that you can ring which all complement the music and add to the emersion.
Gameplay
Old Man’s Journey is by definition a puzzle game, but it’s more about the story. The gameplay more a vehicle for the story than the other way around. That’s ok though, because the story is a lovely little affair. The gameplay mechanics involve altering the environment, usually hills and such so you can progress. There are a few other variations that keep it interesting as well. The game teaches you what you need to know quite well without the need for on screen instructions, so I commend the developers for making such an intuitive game.
The game was originally designed for mobile, so naturally the game plays best in tablet mode on the Switch, however the game plays well with a cursor on screen (as you can see on the video footage I’ve recorded for this review).
Overall
Old Man’s Journey is really all about the story, which luckily is a fantastic one. I don’t want to give it away because I want everyone to witness it themselves without spoilers. The gameplay is fun and seems original, but as the game can be completed in around 90minutes, it does not get super deep. Would I recommend picking this game up? Hell yes! The story is worth the price of admission alone and the gameplay elements are fun and fresh. I’d definitely be confident about buying more Broken Rules games in the future.
