Man this was a lot harder to review than I first though. As it’s the predecessor to Steamworld Dig 2 but has came out after it on the Switch. My brain keeps thinking of it Dig 1 as a sequel, when really it’s not.

Graphics
It’s a vector graphics affair with very moody western tones. Nice and somber. It works well for the game and the character really shines through. You might think it all looks a little similar at first, but it broadens out later on, changing it up just when you are starting to get tired of a brown hole in the ground.

Sounds
The first thing that hits you is the the title screen music, it’s got such a great western feel to it. The rest of the score is a subtle affair, it’s good because it just sits there in the background but you the subtle vibes do make their way through to you.

Gameplay
The game is essentially a metroidvania with RPG style upgrades. You dig down, get precious stones and take them back to the surface to sell. This gives you money allowing you to upgrade to dig deeper and unlock more stuff. Every so often you come across a new feature upgrade like gaining a drill to dig through hard rock, allowing you to further explore gated areas. This is all pretty fun and the game play loop works well for a handheld device, I played this on a couple of train journeys and had a great time, then the end just popping it into sleep mode for later.

My only real gripe with the game is getting back to the surface. I feel this was rectified in the sequel with more regular pipes to the surface, but in the Dig 1 you really need to start using the teleporters you buy from the shop. But once you’ve got more than one teleporter, they only send you back to town or to the last teleporter you used in the mine. Not a massive deal, but if I could have selected which one to go to on the map, it would have made life a lot easier.

Overall
I think the best way to see this game is like a very nice artists sketch. On its own merits it’s good however you know the painting is going to be better, or in this case: Steamworld Dig 2. Would I recommend buying the game? Well if you’ve played Dig 2 and enjoyed it, then think of this as a 6 hour DLC pack which fills in some background story. It’s worth your time and your money. If you’re new to the franchise, then maybe you should skip to Dig 2 as it’s the more polished affair which improves upon Dig 1’s faults and accomplishments.
