Kara Eaker, an alternate on the United States womens gymnastics team who was reportedly vaccinated two months ago, tested positive for COVID-19 in Japan. The Monday announcement comes on the heels news a day earlier that tennis star Coco Gauff had contracted the virus and would not travel to the games.
Athletes aren't required by the IOC nor the Tokyo and Japanese governments to be vaccinated to compete, and there are reportedly a number of them who avoided the vaccine believing it would impact their performance.
