On this day, a world-famous drink made its first appearance in the historical record. On June 1, 1494, the first written mention of Scotch whisky was made. The entry appeared in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, which tracked the income and expenses of the Scottish crown. The passage states that King James IV granted Friar John Cor a large amount of malt in order for him to produce “aqua vitae,” a Latin phrase which literally means “waters of life,” but which at that time was used to refer to any distilled spirit. The amount of malt given to Friar Cor was enough to produce over 1,500 bottles of whisky, so it’s safe to assume that the beverage was already fairly well-established by the time the entry was made. Scotch whisky would only grow in popularity from there, rapidly becoming the favorite drink of Scotland and eventually delighting connoisseurs the world over.
