In Outlast, the player assumes the role of investigative journalist Miles Upshur, as he navigates a dilapidated psychiatric hospital overrun by homicidal patients. Set in the remote mountains of Colorado horrors await you within Mount Massive Asylum. This long-abandoned home for the mentally ill was recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation and has been operating in secrecy until now.
As the story of Outlast begins Miles Upshur, acting on a tip from an inside source, breaks into the facility and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies within the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
Outlast is played from a first-person perspective. The player can walk, run, crouch, jump, and climb over objects. Unlike most games however, the player is unable to attack enemies, and instead must hide in lockers or under beds. Most of the hospital is unlit, and the only way for the player to see while in the dark is through the lens of a camcorder equipped with night vision.
Outlast was released by Red Barrels studios on September 4, 2013, for download through Steam, and it was released February 4, 2014, for the PlayStation 4. The downloadable content, Outlast: Whistleblower serves as an overlapping prequel to the original game. Upon release Outlast received positive reviews, and serves as one of the best examples of survival horror done right.
Outlast 2 is expected to be released in Q1 2017.
