Outrun 2 (Beta Chihiro) - CXBXR (CI-ab6b478)
36YouTuber and fellow Outrun 2 super-fan Noobsaibot21 pointed out a little Outrun 2 factoid to me last night, in the comments of one of my other Outrun 2 videos, that I was previously unaware of; the Ferrari Testarossa (the original 1986 Outrun car) had a very different look in the original arcade Chihiro version of Outrun 2 compared to all the subsequent versions of the game. From Outrun 2 on the Xbox and beyond, we've had a different looking car which is the one we're now all familiar with. Noob' also pointed out that this Testrossa was in the Xbox demo of Outrun 2, but only as a rival car.
This got me curious as to whether the Chihiro Beta version of Outrun 2, which is just about playable in original Xbox emulator CXBXR, had this original design, or the one that we've seen in all the later games. So, I downloaded a new version of CXBXR last night, just to have a look see, and it is indeed the different version of the Testarossa you use in the proper Chihiro version of Outrun 2. Unfortunately the emulation on Chihiro OR2 in CXBXR doesn't seem any different to the last time I tried it out (as in the game's playable, but the graphics are pretty messed up). It's amazing to think that there are still new things I'm finding out about Outrun 2 all these years later.
Oh, and a weird side effect of the emulation here is that your car seems to catch on some sort of invisible barrier when trying to get through the fork in the track at the end of each stage. This brings the car to a complete stop and makes the game throw a bit of a hissy fit with the camera totally spazzing out as you try to advance. Sometimes I can get through it after awhile, sometimes I'll get stuck there until the timer runs out.
