Oxenfree Part 1 - Time to Party
0Our October spookiness wraps up with Oxenfree, a narrative adventure game released by Night School studios in 2016. While a bit of an odd choice, this game has an eerie and suspenseful ghost story which I found to be quite good. The game is based around a real-time dialogue system, where we have to select responses as the conversation progresses as if they were actually happening. The choices we make not only affect how the other characters react with us but also how they react with each other. It's a unique concept and an ambitious design that works really well.
In the game, we assume the role of Alex, a high school senior, out for a weekend bash with some classmates and her newly acquired step-brother, Jonas, to Edward's Island off the coast of Washington State. It's a coming-of-age story driven by some excellent writing and voice acting. The art styling is nice, and also has a mesmerizing ambient sound track and some wild visual effects. All in all this game makes for an interesting and thought-provoking experience which I really enjoyed, and hope you will too.
