Paladin's Quest (1993, (Lennus I) SNES/SFC Gameplay 2022)
Paladin's Quest is a Jrpg for the Super NIntendo/Famicom, it was released in 1993. It is also known as Lennus I, the frst part to Lennus II which unlike this game didn't get naa official English release. The game was Developed by Asmik Ace, and Published by Asmik, Enix.
STORY: 18/20
Chezni is a kid that weilds the power of magic, and because of his gift he is whisked away to a school of magic in another town. During school he is challenged to enter some mysterious tower that is meant to be haunted by one of the other kids. In his haste to impress his friends he agrees to enter, at the top he finds a machine that activates, thus releasing an ancient trapped being hell bent on the destruction of the World. As it was your fault for the release of this ancient demon, it becomes your task to defeat it and save your planet from complete annihilation.
GRAPHICS: 16/20
This game has such a unique pastel pallet set, it's unusual colours makes this game stand out so much from any other Jrpg that came before (or after) other than Lennus II. The world map looks really nice, towns look nice, monsters look great, my only gripe with this is the character models used don't look that great and don't really fit the game's style, whilst NPCs look great. Menu design looks a little dated now but is very simplistic in look, but the status menu gives a nice picture of your characters in party that really stand out. Animations for spells and skills are nice but some are so similar it makes it feel a bit of a cop-off, probably because of cart sizes, they propbably used smae spells to keep this down for more space on the other unique graphics.
SOUND: 16.20
The game's OST is nice, it's not Final F antasy level but its still quite good. The tracks suit the style of game and areas available for exploration. The game has quite a few sound effects used also which is a nice addition. I don't think you'll be turning the sound off any time soon unless you've played the game a few times.
GAMEPLAY: 16/20
So it's a very traditional Jrpg style of play, explore the town, get information, go to a cave or town and move on. The story is pushed forward fairly often so the gameplay is moved forward quite quick but the thing that slows it down is the unbalanced difficulty, so the game forces you really to level if you want any chance of surviving. Difficulty aside, there's a pretty decent game underneath it all. Magic is a great thing also, hte more you use it the better it becomes in power, so casting spells over and over will make the element more powerful.
SYSTEMS: 16/20
So being it's a Jrpg you can expect all the usual systems, save, Inns, shops, menus, a traditional 2D battle system, but what is unique to this game is the use of spells and magic over and over to make them more powerful, it's a unique enough system that I think i've only seen in a couple of SNES Jrpgs. There's quite a few party members to recruit so there's quite an extensive recuitment system in place also, where each has their own skills and such.
OVER ALL: 82/100
I love this game, it's so unique compared to every other Jrpg of the time, excluding Lennus II. Do I recommend this game now..? HECK YES! it's one of those gems that any fan of Jrpgs needs to play.
