Part 1: Open Source License Discussion: Asheron's Call Drunkenfell Server
I love Asheron's Call. It's a Sandbox MMORPG from before World of Warcraft ruined everything and convinced developers that the only MMOs that could be made had to be super casualized Themepark versions of Old Everquest. Well, Asheron's Call took a different approach and had moderate success from 1999 to 2017 where it was shut down in order to attempt to divert users over to Lord of the Rings Online by the same publisher, since that game was more profitable at the time.
Asheron's Call is now Abandonware and survives by Open Source communities born from a mutual base of frameworks all designed to help each-other play Asheron's Call again. Very closely resembling End of Retail, the ACE Framework runs several servers hosting hundreds of players.
Today we are talking about Drukenfell, a server unique in the sense it's not just trying to recreate AC1 at it was at end of retail, but rather take ACE's End of Retail status and advance it further with BRAND NEW CONTENT handcrafted by the community. It's an amazing idea that sadly is being detailed by it's own bad judgement.
To clarify, I want Drukenfell to succeed and succeed in a big way, but they need to start abiding the Open Source License agreement and stop being lazy about using open source software tracking systems.
Kon or Konquesting is a person I regularly have discussions with, he is what you'd call a Free Software Crusader who works in Pubic Relations, I'm going to discuss this whole thing with him today while we play some Asheron's Call in the background on the ACE Coldeve server.
The video turned out overwhelming negative, which is unfortunate because it comes from a place of genuine concern for a project I want to be massively successful.
