I explain a build I've created using a Marauder in Path of Exile, I build him through act 1 using a 2 handed axe with armor and health as my most focused stats. Using 3 medium health flasks and 2 medium mana flasks i have had no trouble surviving all the enemies in act 1.
The aim of the build is to use a 1 handed sword and shield early on until you get a decent or magic 2 handed. Focusing on only red gems, the first gem you want to obtain is called Heavy Strike, You can use it both with your one and two handed weapons to do massive damage. The second gem you will want to obtain is sweep which is an AoE attack that does heaps of damage in a circle around your character. You also have an option to get a third gem which is called Decoy Totem and it's purely used to take all aggro of you so you can get away or take less damage.
The points you get to put into the skill tree need to put all your points in health at the start and then in armor to get the Armour mastery point. This provides great defense against all the melee attacks that may come unexpectedly in the early stages of the game. Moving on from that you place them into critical damage reduction from enemies to heart of the Gladiator for extra health and strength. Going straight across the next point you want to get to in the skill tree is diamond skin for +15% resistance and across to start getting more health for act 2.
