Olteus is a shoot 'em up game for the NEC PC-88VA developed by Winkysoft in 1987, an obscure Japanese company known for doing a number of Super Robot Taisen titles. They've since gone bankrupt. During the 80s they were one of many developers at the time producing titles for various Japanese computers, such as the NEC PC-88x and 98x series, Sharp x68000 and X1, Fujitsu FM-7, and derived consoles such as the MSX, some of which was published and hosted through a very sophisticated (for its time) software vending kiosk system that copied purchased games onto a floppy or cartridge, known as Takeru. This game was one of those titles.

Information regarding this game is very sparse on the Internet, and finding and emulating the ROM has proven difficult for some (the PC-88VA had a very short release run, having come right before the 98x line was launched, which had a similar, if not better feature set. It's a very distinct beast), but the plot is pretty standard for its time: an invasion plot in space, and a specialized pilot using an experimental fighter to stop them. It was a side-scroller akin to R-Type, and had JRPG mechanics in which you went to a shop to upgrade your weaponry and lives. The game was ported to the X68000 with identical gameplay and redone music, but with no plot. Needless to say some of its charm was lost in the process, as the PC-88VA version had a distinct look and feel with the opening visuals and music that I found very captivating.

I've gone ahead and ripped the sounds from Hoot to share here. They were numbered, so the titles may not be accurate to their use in-game.
