Perfect Dark (2000)
Perfect Agent (Hard) difficulty
N64 version on PC (Mouse & Keyboard)
Semi blind/Casual Playthrough

—Personal/Subjective rating—
Difficulty level of this game: 9/10 (Probably 10 with a N64 controller)
How good is the game: 9.8/10
How good is the soundtrack: 9.7/10

This is probably the best FPS ever made on console.
No sorry, I am wrong, it is the best FPS made on console.
This is some high quality standards that no FPS come close to reach in 2022.

GoldenEye 007 was outstanding, but holy shit this game is something even greater.

It is unbelievable that was made for the N64, no other game come close to looking that great on this console, except maybe some other Rare game (Conker for exemple).
The textures doesn’t looks like shit like almost all the other N64 games.
The fake shadow they put at every place that need to have shadow looks really good and make the game looks more realistic.
The "reflection" on the gun and some windows is one of my favorite thing about how they use the N64 to create those.

The animations of the characters is ridiculously good when you shoot them they react realistically.
If you shoot their gun off their hand,
they might:
- Draw a sidearm to shoot at you.
- Run to get their gun back or get a gun from a fallen comrade nearby.
- Raise their hand and ask you to don’t shoot.
- If you don’t shoot them they will not do anything aggressive.
- If you shoot them, they will attack you hand to hand or draw a sidearm.
Those details doesn’t exist in ANY recent FPS and it should because it add some realism and randomness that is fun in a game.

The animations of your own characters is smooth AF.
The reloading, weapons swap, shooting, every animations looks smooth, polished and great.
You can even see your character pulling the trigger of the firearms when you shoot, this is some crazy details for a N64 game.
Even on the next gen console (PS2/Xbox/GC) I don’t remember a game having animations that are that great, Killzone on PS2 for exemple looks like garbage, Halo have some nice animations but they are way to "stiff" (I understand that it is to make MC looks more powerful btw).
The only games that come close to have animations this smooth are TimeSplitters 2/3, those game are made by the same peoples that made GoldenEye and Perfect Dark for the most parts, that’s why, the animations of the weapons still looks better in Perfect Dark in my opinion.

It might not look that smooth on a N64 because the framerate was shit (sometimes dropping to 10fps lol), and it is a valid complain without a doubt but I didn’t have these problems because it was running at a relatively smooth 60fps.

Peoples frequently say "this game was ahead of his time" for many games, it is overused most of the time, but for this game it is certainly true.
This game was so much ahead of his time that in today FPS games, they don’t have half of what this game have.
The Campaign/Story is only about half of the game, there is still way more things to play in this game.

I have no doubt there was some genius working at Rare and it is a fucking shame they haven’t done more FPS like these when they make a shit ton of money reselling nearly the same game every years.

I have never finished this game before, some missions could have been done faster but I didn’t know perfectly what to do for each objectives, this is certainly not one of my Duke Nukem 3D playthrough (I finish DN3D about a dozen times) but I guess it is still watchable.
I try to not use any hint/guide but I had to for the last mission because the infrared google wasn’t showing the crack in the wall that I need to shoot and I didn’t know which wall I had to destroy.
The booster (item) didn’t work, Carrington Institute was a pain to finish, it is still one of the best if not the best mission in the game.

I will probably upload a gameplay video of some of the cheats in some levels and my failed attempts for this playthrough.

Video: 1920x1080p/60fps at 12MB/s.
Sound: 320kbs/48kHz.
Virtual surround & EQ: Dolby Atmos for Headphones.
(3D/HRTF Audio seems to work since surprisingly this game have surround output, the gunshot sound seems to be surround. There is no higher and lower sound.)
