[Personal Best] Inside — 139282 — Sayonara Wild Hearts [Better Quality]
Inside is the twenty-second (and penultimate) level of the game Sayonara Wild Hearts, where we chase Little Death down and see her transform into Big Death! (And then into the final boss of the game, the Eye of Death)
Scores in SWH are primarily made up of points from collecting little hearts, big hearts, and square coins. Each item makes the next of that kind worth more - the first heart is worth 1, the second is worth 2, the third is worth 3, etc. Big hearts start at 25, coins start at 1000. In addition, there are "style points" that come from getting dangerously close to an obstacle (Risky!) and moving a certain distance continuously in one direction (Slide!), which are worth 50 each. Inside in particular has a new source of style points: Spinny!, also worth 50 points. This happens if you go all the way around in one direction, either inside a tunnel or on the puke slide.
Inside, like all boss levels, has a few places where you need to mash the button. The individual button presses are worth more and more points, and there's a bonus for reaching certain thresholds as well. Less than 15 mash gets a 100 bonus, 15-29 gets 250, 30+ gets 500. There are also some boosts on this level, which increment by 100. The brief section with the bow can be worth a lot of points too - firstly for hitting all the targets, especially since some heart boxes show up after you shoot all the hearts, and also for the extra-large combo and medium combo you can squeeze in (it might be possible to do extra-large, medium, AND small) worth 2500 + 200 = 2700 points.
I exploit the death glitch in this level by dying on the post at the same time as hitting the boost, so when it sets me back to the first checkpoint, the first boost is now worth 200, the next 300, etc until the last boost is worth 700. So the glitch nets me an extra 600 points total. My adjusted score without it would be 138682.
A couple of things that make it challenging to get my best possible score here:
- When you go through the tunnel with all the little hearts in it, you sometimes come out with one more or one less heart than usual. You can try to control this by exactly where and when you start spinning, but it's difficult to predict it perfectly.
- I have a tendency to miss a row of hearts at the *very end* of the level, which feels pretty demoralizing after an otherwise good run.
- If I could mash the button better (or on a keyboard) that would be a big source of points. I get, at best, 21, 12, 12, 34, 13, 25. If I could get those 20-somethings up to 30 and those 12-13s up to 15, that would be almost 1500 more points without even counting the points from being able to mash higher than 34.
I got a Good instead of a Perfect on one of the timing prompts, and it's going to haunt me, lol...
