Using the most recent Ultra patch as of the upload date. I'm pretty sure there's only one patch for this game, but I'm mentioning it just to be clear.

So I figured I'd try this out. I've never really bothered with it before since I figured it would just trivialize the game. After having tried it, I can't really say that it's strictly "harder" or "easier." It depends on which character you use and which opponents you face.

So I tried a few characters. Reimu destroyed the game, as expected. Lyrica felt a bit easy as well, thanks to her scope's infinite reach. (I didn't try Komachi but I assumed she'd be easy for the same reason.) I lost with both Mystia and Sakuya, and figured I'd give Mystia some more runs, since Sakuya's a pain. Here's the result I guess. I played kind of poorly in the early rounds, since I was getting lazy. Did well on Medicine, then humiliated myself by letting Yuuka kill me twice. Eiki was a lot of fun, with some ridiculous misdirecting going on. (In an earlier run, I once reached the very top of the screen without using a spell on the way.)

So this is pretty fun, altogether. It doesn't have such a huge affect on difficulty, but it's a fun change from the usual gameplay nonetheless. And considering how most ultra patches are shit on a shingle, this one's actually pretty damn good.
