Phantasy Star was originally released on the Sega SG-1000 Mark III within Japan. The Sega Mark III had an optional Yamaha YM2413 FM sound chip, which gave it better sound capabilities than the NTSC-US and PAL Master Systems. The Japanese Master System would then have the sound chip built in.
