If your looking for a game to scratch that Breath of the Wild itch, Pine might be just the game for you. Pine is a fantastic adventure-rpg perfect for the Nintendo Switch. Check out my review...

Are you looking to scratch that Breath of the Wild itch or maybe you just miss the wondrous lands of Albion in Fable, and if you're like me, you probably have fond memories of games like these. Then Pine might be the game to scratch that irritating itch. Developed by Twirlbound and published by Kongergate for PC, this game is a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch.
The story of Pine takes place in the wonderous world of Albamare. And you play Hue, a young ambitious adult who's eager to save his tribe by exploring the vast unknown. When Hue ventures out he must trade and fight his way through a stirring ecology with creatures much smarter than him all while struggling to survive and find a new home. The story telling unfolds in a linear manner of quest giving which works rather well for this adventure-rpg. But the story also doesn’t do a great job at telling you why each village has decided to turn on each other. Only that they are fighting for resources, leaving big gaps in the stories progression.

Pine starts off rather slow, but really begins to pick up pace once you find your bearings. It’s also heavily comprised of exploring, gathering, crafting and puzzles. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Trading resources with villages and creating alliances with different factions are just as important and absolutely essential to the game. These alliances can go from good to bad and back for some extremely fun faction battles that you can use to manipulate the other villages to complete a quest. It's an absolutely brilliant idea. But then there's also Hue with his progression of developing his fighting abilities to survive on his own. This makes it a pleasure to advance throughout the game and many times it takes solving some clever puzzles to do so. These puzzles range from hitting the correct switches to deciphering clues on walls and platforming your way through vaults filled with treasures to discover. It really has a Breath of the Wild feel, which is a welcomed addition to any game.

I just can't get enough of the artistic style of games like the first Fable game, and that's the first thing I thought of when I played Pine. The character models are fantastic and well-detailed, each with a playful design. The landscape in the background and just the entire atmosphere was a pleasure to explore. But when it comes to the sound, some of the small sound effects are just plain bad and can break the immersion a bit. The soundtrack on the other hand was wonderful. But there are times in the game when you are exploring that you are wondering where the background music went. And this gives you a feeling of an empty lifeless world.

With a few short-comings, Pine is still a fantastic and above average adventure-rpg that’s a welcomed addition to the Nintendo Switch. It’s quite an impressive feat for such a small team and hats off to them for this amazing game. Pine score’s an 8.7 out of 10. It’s available now on PC and November 26 on the Nintendo Switch.
