I was giving this song a listen and recalled how it and another track from the album Meddle, "Echoes," was used in the 1972 film "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii." I was so
impressed with that film and have watched it numerous times since the 70's, including the newer and longer cuts. Then it hit me, the fast-paced, teetering tempo of "One Of These Days" would be perfect for actual gladiatorial scenes, and not merely for amphitheater ruins. The rest simply fell into place, including the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. I also found an engaging cinematic solution for the line, "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces." The winds during intro and at the end also suggest arising from and returning to the windswept ruins, so that both past and present tense coexist. In any case, enjoy the movie.
