Technically you don't "create" a character in this game, you play a fixed character "The Nameless One" but you do get to choose their stat build. I'd never played this before but I had played three of the other Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Icewind Dale). I knew this was more focused on story and talking than combat so I considered that in this build but my main aim was to create a fairly robust mage. You actually start as a fighter and it's a while before you can switch to mage, though I didn't know that at the time.
When I first played BG1 it was on the "normal" setting and I bumped it up to "core" when I played BG2 and IWD. I decided I could face a tougher challenge for this so I put the difficulty on 4 (the second hardest) and have no full heal on rest and no max HP on level up.
This is a 100% blind run, I complete the game without ever resorting to a FAQ or guide but because you get very little guidance I get stuck a couple of times and don't complete every quest or find everything in the game. That actually made this run more of a challenge but I wasn't aware of that at the time.
