Planet Nomads fast & versatile mobile base
I wanted a mobile base that wouldn't suck up all my time (and the fun out of the game) when doing long hauls, and went through quite a few designs before this one. It's actually not my favorite, but it is the most effective.
My criteria were:
1. Fast!
-= (55kph is easy even on uneven terrain)
2. High storage capacity
-= (24 small containers = 2.4 large containers = 288 slots)
3. Uranium powered for long range (in areas without much biomass, like the poles)
4. Medium 3D printer connected to onboard storage to manufacture deep queues while mobile.
5. Stasis chamber for sleep and replenishment.
-= (easily accessible from the ground, it's my front bumper)
6. Good ground clearance (adjusted from great ground clearance from my previous requirements).
-= (can clear the medium sized orb shaped metal nodes easily, previous designs could clear the largest rocks, but would flip too easily)
7. Low center of mass (seemingly counter to #6) to reduce likelihood of flipping (righting the turtle is frustrating).
-= (center of mass is well below the centerline of the generator, the cockpit is actually quite light)
8. Able to climb steep mountains.
9. Able to traverse extremely uneven terrain.
10. Good visibility while driving (cockpit high and central or slightly rearward).
There's even room in front of the cab to place a FAD or armory (temporarily, if/when needed).
I tried to show enough detail so you can build one for yourself. What you can't see are the conveyors behind the 3D printer, under the cockpit connecting the two sides' storage to each-other and the printer.
I did a drop test a couple times at the beginning of the video to show it's fairly well balanced front-to-rear as well (took minor adjustments) and that it doesn't shake/shimmy due to the game physics (that part was recorded in 0.7.5, before the 0.7.5.1 physics fix).
The pivoting suspension (bogies) help to keep as many wheels connected to the ground as possible. Since the wheels are the source of torque in this game (wheel-motors), this helps not only with traction, but also speed and climbing ability.
If there's enough interest, I may record a how-to video so others can build it.
My system:
Ubuntu 16.04LTS (Linux)
i7-4790K (not overclocked, yet)
32GB RAM
EVGA GTX 950 FTW edition (clocked ~20% faster than standard 950 chips from the factory)
Cheap, old SOYO 24" 1920x1200 display (may look cropped at the sides if you have a 1080p or 4K display)
Recorded with OBS Studio.
Clips stitched together with OpenShot video editor.
