I genuinely bought Skarner way back in the day for 975 RP rather than saving up Blue Essence (at the time called IP, or 'Influence Points') since I just thought he looked cool, both aesthetically and in gameplay, long before any of his reworks. Back in the day, he had a slow on every empowered Q, then later he would have to build stacks on enemies to earn a stun, then later that was moved to his E. Initially I hated the Spire mechanic and this edition of Skarner, but after trial and error and playing him all sorts of ways, I found a way I truly enjoyed him, and at the time, that meant Nashor's Tooth and movespeed. Yeah, it was a different time.
Though perhaps by accident, we're paying homage to all those different ways I tried to play Skarner, building our AD item, Trinity Force, our AP item, Riftmaker, and a bit of both and lots of Attack Speed with Terminus.
Hopefully this won't be the last game I play with him until the rework, but people tell me that rework is merely patches away. We'll know for sure when he arrives on PBE.
Then we'll start throwing rocks at people I guess.
