Layers of Fear is a psychological survival horror game developed by Bloober Team for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
In Layers of Fear, you control a painter on a psychotic quest to complete your masterpiece. The game takes place in a Victorian mansion, in which all is not as it seems. (Who would have thought?)
You've seen this type of gameplay before. First-person, uncover-the-mystery with a jump scare here and a puzzle there, all through the lens of a story that slowly reveals itself as you make progress.
That said, a game doesn't have to be wholly original to be fun and Layers of Fear is plenty of fun, particularly for the bargain price of $20. The environments are detailed and provide that sort of passive storytelling that makes games like Layers of Fear so compelling when executed well.
The atmosphere is appropriately dread inducing, the sound design is on point (another important element of a game such as this), and if you're like me, you'll feel suspense creep into your bones mere moments after firing up the game.
