"God Save the Child" is a detective novel written by Robert B. Parker. It was first published in 1974 and is the second book in Parker's popular Spenser series, featuring the titular character Spenser, a tough and witty private investigator based in Boston.
In "God Save the Child," Spenser is hired by a woman named Patty Giacomin to find her missing 15-year-old son, Kevin. Patty is concerned about Kevin's involvement with a religious cult called the Church of the Whispering Mind, led by a charismatic and manipulative leader named Reverend Upton. Spenser takes on the case and begins his investigation into Kevin's disappearance.
As Spenser delves deeper into the case, he discovers that the Church of the Whispering Mind is involved in various illegal activities, including child exploitation and drug trafficking. Spenser encounters resistance from the cult's members and faces threats as he gets closer to uncovering the truth. Along the way, he receives assistance from his friend and ally, Hawk, a tough and resourceful enforcer.
While searching for Kevin, Spenser uncovers a complex web of deceit, corruption, and abuse within the cult. He becomes determined to rescue Kevin and expose the criminal activities of the Church. As the story progresses, Spenser faces dangerous confrontations, engages in intense action sequences, and employs his wit and investigative skills to navigate the treacherous world he has stepped into.
"God Save the Child" showcases Parker's signature writing style, characterized by crisp dialogue, fast-paced narrative, and a strong sense of place. Parker's portrayal of Spenser as a smart and principled detective, known for his sharp observations and moral compass, adds depth and intrigue to the story. The novel also explores themes such as the vulnerability of children, the dangers of manipulation and coercion, and the lengths one will go to protect the innocent.
As with many of Parker's works, "God Save the Child" combines elements of the hardboiled detective genre with social commentary and a focus on the moral implications of the cases Spenser takes on. The book received critical acclaim for its engaging plot, well-developed characters, and the author's ability to tackle complex social issues within the framework of a gripping detective story.
