She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy of manners by Oliver Goldsmith, first performed in 1773. Set in 18th-century England, it revolves around a series of misunderstandings at the Hardcastle household, where Charles Marlow, a shy young man, is expected to marry Kate Hardcastle. Marlow, however, is tricked into believing the Hardcastle home is an inn, leading to mistaken identities and humorous situations. While Marlow falls in love with Kate, thinking she is a maid, Constance Neville plots to elope with Hastings, and Tony Lumpkin plays pranks on everyone. The play satirizes social class, generational conflicts, and the nature of love, concluding with two marriages and the resolution of all deceptions.
