"Wild Geese" is a young adult novel by Caroline Pignat, published in 2010. It serves as a sequel to Pignat's previous novel, "Greener Grass," which follows the Byrnes' family's struggles during the Irish famine and their journey to emigrate to Canada.
In "Wild Geese," set in 1847, the story continues with Kit Byrne as the protagonist. After surviving the hardships of the Irish famine, Kit embarks on a perilous journey to reunite with her family in the Canadian colonies. Determined and willing to risk everything, including her relationship with her friend Mick O'Toole, Kit faces numerous challenges along the way.
Due to the events of the previous novel, Kit begins "Wild Geese" as a wanted criminal, pursued by both the law and the Lynch brothers seeking revenge. Together with Mick, she boards a ship called the Erin, bound for Quebec. To avoid detection, Kit disguises herself as a boy and assumes the identity of Mick's brother, Kenny.
Conditions on the ship are harsh, with families packed into cramped quarters and limited rations. However, Kit and Mick befriend another family escaping the famine, finding solace in their companionship. As they navigate the challenges of the journey, Kit and Mick also encounter a stowaway and face threats from an unpleasant sailor named Coyle.
Amidst the difficult circumstances, Mick confesses his love for Kit, but she remains preoccupied with reuniting her family and is unsure about her own feelings. The primary focus of Kit's thoughts and actions is centered around finding her mother and siblings, Annie and Billy.
"Wild Geese" explores themes of family, love, survival, and the resilience of individuals in the face of adversity. It depicts the hardships endured by Irish immigrants during the famine and their determination to start anew in a foreign land.
