Amid a political debate over Congress's "wealth redistribution" poll promise, Indian Overseas Congress chairperson Sam Pitroda has mentioned a US-like inheritance tax. However, Pitroda came under fire from the BJP even as the Congress distanced itself from his remarks. In an interview with ANI, Pitroda defended Congress's poll promise, saying the policy of redistribution of wealth was in the interest of the people and not in the interest of the super-rich only. In a stunning own goal that has pushed the Congress on the backfoot, senior party leader Sam Pitroda today stoked the debate over the BJP's allegations that the Congress is planning a redistribution of wealth. Mr. Pitroda's example of an inheritance tax in the US added fuel to the fire that the Congress has been trying to douse. Earlier this month, sitting Congress MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi promised that if the Congress party comes to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it will conduct a survey to find out who possesses wealth in the country and undertake an exercise to redistribute the same. Amid an uproar by the Congress party that PM Modi is deliberately spreading false information about their manifesto, Modi reiterated his redistribution of wealth claim and attacks Congress on Sam Pitroda's statement with the slogan "Congress Ki Loot, Zindadi Ke Sath Bhi; Zindagi Ke Bad Bhi". Union Home Minister Amit Shah says, "After Pitroda's remark, the Congress party is completely exposed." The Congress distanced itself from the senior leader's remarks and said they do not reflect the party's position. Sam Pitroda, in response to facing backlash over his statement, issued a clarification. He wrote, "I mentioned the U.S. inheritance tax only as an example," stating that the remark has nothing to do with Congress's policy.
