It says a lot, I think, about ourselves and our response when we are sincerely given compliment or praise. When we are told..we're beautiful... How quickly for some of us the walls will go up. That we believe with all our hearts we cannot be receptive to the positive things that come our way.

For some it says a lot about our distrust of the world around us. Of the cycles we have endured and seen again and again to the point that we have ultimately arrived at treating it as a universal fact: what we are hearing or seeing is not the truth. Only our pain is the truth.

For others, myself included, it can say a lot about how much we distrust ourselves. That we can be unworthy of praise, that it is either ignorance or a mistake on the giver's part. That if we allow these good things into us for just one minute of our lives and have a single genuine moment of pride, we will be ruined. All our efforts to grow stronger and disciplined, erased somehow, some way.

It says a lot about our frailty, that the way we have been going has not made us stronger for it. How such a thing as a few words can pose such a threat to our way of life that we've come to avoid them, especially the words meant with love.

This world needs more love in it, and we need more love in us too. We cannot live our lives stone-faced and unreceptive to this vital source of nature. That is not how we find our strength, it is not how we grow. A woman or man cannot sustain themselves alone on cold discipline devoid of compassion. Otherwise...what are we then? Skilled but mystified by happiness? Successful but numb to the warmth of the living?

We must learn to reconcile with our fears and open up to the idea we are good people. And even if we have done things in the past that we're not proud of, that haunt us sometimes even now, we cannot be afraid to admit we can be a better person now. This is our lives that we are talking about, and we've got the rest of them left to live. Let's make the most of it with a little more faith we can be a better person without having to give up something being it.

Beneath the skin deep fears, the insecurities in our blood, the screaming doubts...there are beautiful bones in us yet. There are.
