62Pokémon games are divided up into generations, with each new region and flagship game kicking off a brand new family of games. Starting with the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield in 2019, Pokémon entered Generation VIII. In many ways, Generation VIII has been the most revolutionary Pokémon generation to date, with tons of new features and changes to the old formula.
But no generation is perfect, and Generation VIII made a number of choices that did not sit well with fans. With the upcoming release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet marking the beginning of Generation IX, many fans will look back at Generation VIII with fondness, while others are happy to see it over.
One of the most controversial decisions made in Generation VIII was to exclude a good chunk of the existing Pokédex. About a quarter of all Pokémon were never made available in Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, or Legends: Arceus. This marked the first time a new generation didn't include all previous Pokémon. This decision is understandable when considering the immense amount of work it would take, but it still made for a glaring omission.
The Pokémon games are, at their hearts, RPGs. They provide the player with an exciting world to explore, but many of the prior generations don't actually allow for much exploration.
Starting with the Wild Areas in Sword and Shield and to a much greater extent in Legends: Arceus, the Generation VIII games provided wide expansive worlds to explore. Players have been longing for freedom in Pokémon games since the beginning, and Generation VIII delivered in spades.
