Pokémon's eighth generation. Start it with Let's Go or start it with Sword/Shield it doesn't matter - either way it's been marred by controversy and middling titles. While it seems like every modern Pokémon game has been met with an equal measure of fans and critics, they all have offered something unique to the series.

Now more than ever, Pokémon feels experimental. It feels like Game Freak aren't afraid to take risks, and The Pokémon Company is unafraid to hire ILCA Inc. where required. It's a bold new world, and Gen 9 seems to be synthesizing the lessons learned by Legends Arceus and all its previous Gen 8 forbearers. So before we head off on our new Pokémon adventure, let's take a second (or 90 minutes) to recap where we've been.
