Finally came back to this hack after a while and made some improvements to the route. Of note:

1. Checked trainer poke stats to minimize surprise ranges and optimize move usage. Still needs some cleanup since I think I could cut one Center out of the run.
2. Delayed evolution of starter by one level (evolve at L17 instead of L16) to get Ice Punch, and I don’t teach Ice Beam. While Ice Beam has a higher base power than Ice Punch, the starter’s evolutionary line has much better Attack than Special Attack. In fact, the starters are effectively reskinned Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile (same base stats).
3. Tutor Volt Tackle in the town with the second gym. This makes a lot of fights faster early on, and some later as well. Earthquake gets sacrificed as a result, as it doesn’t really have too much utility. Final moveset is Surf, Volt Tackle, Ice Punch, and Return.
4. Skipped a route with a half-dozen trainers by going through the cave before the second gym and surfing across.

Got a neat little 5 1/2 min time save as a result, but lost a lot of time in the first split as I had to reset for stats, and fought an extra Rocket (with 5 pokes) by accident. ;_;

Main had a Relaxed nature with 11 HP, 10 Att, 25 Def, 15 SpA, 18 SpD, and 15 Spe.
