Pole Position (Atari 8-Bit and Atari 5200 Version) - Atari Grand Prix Longplay -
Pole Position is a classic Formula 1 racing game released in 1982 for arcades by Namco, with Atari handling the US distribution. The game became a massive hit, topping the charts as the highest-grossing arcade game in America in 1983.
The gameplay is simple: you start with a qualifying lap to earn your starting position (aiming for the coveted "pole position" for bonus points), then compete in a four-lap race against a timer. You'll pass computer-controlled cars while avoiding billboards and road hazards. Each completed lap grants you an "extended play" time bonus to keep racing.
The Atari 8-bit version, released in 1983, is identical to the Atari 5200 version since they share the same hardware. Controls are straightforward: steer with the joystick, shift gears by pushing up (high) or down (low), and use the button to brake. The throttle is always kept at full speed.
You can choose from three difficulty levels - Malibu Grand Prix (easiest), Namco Speedway (intermediate), or Atari Grand Prix (hardest with more traffic and hazards) - all on the same Fuji Speedway track. The graphics are blocky but functional for 1983, making it easy to spot obstacles. The sound includes basic engine noises, skids, and crashes, but is fairly limited.
Historically, Pole Position is a landmark title that popularized third-person racing games. The Atari 8-bit port captures the arcade's essence, despite lacking the original's steering wheel and pedals.
Personally, it was one of my favorite racing games back in the day, probably my absolute favorite from the 80s. Looking back now, though, it's basically just a time trial against computer cars with no real AI. The game focuses on speed and precision, which can feel repetitive after a while. Once you've mastered the track, there isn't much drawing you back.
Nonetheless, I still think it's an iconic title worth revisiting for retro gaming fans, especially Atari enthusiasts, as it perfectly captures the pioneering spirit of early 80s arcade racing.
