Predator 2 - Movie Review
1"Predator 2" (1990) directed by Stephen Hopkins is a surprisingly decent sequel but if you didn't like / appreciate the first film then there is no point seeing this. For the rest of you who were left wanting a little more, it is unlikely you will be disappointed here.
It's 1997 and we are in Los Angeles, California, there is a heat wave affecting the city and there is a turf war between some Columbian and Jamaican drug cartels. Police desperately try to control the situation but they are equally matched in firepower so the streets are very dangerous to walk. A Predator observes the fighting and eventually starts to pick off the strongest prey one by one. Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) discovers the Predator's victim's bodies and fights for jurisdiction of the mysterious killer's case against higher up Peter Keyes (Gary Busey) who wants to study and exploit it instead of killing it.
Predator 2 is actually really fun I won't lie. It has great sets and practical effects, and the Predator itself does not disappoint. While I, and probably most people, prefer the first film, this one is pretty close in terms of quality and action, and even offers an arguably better storyline. We get more time spent with the unmasked Predator and he has some pretty funny things to say and do in this, such as sparing a lady specifically because his thermal vision can somehow see that she is pregnant, and even finishing Harrigan's sentence of "You are one ugly motherf*cker!" I recently learned that the Alien & Predator franchises both share the same cinematic universe and this new information has made me care about Predator's lore and technology even more, and we do get to learn additional quirks and fun facts about the Predator.
Now just because I said the storyline is arguably better in this compared to the previous film's, it's still not that meaningful or great. This should be looked as a popcorn sci-fi action film and nothing more, and if you head in with those expectations you will be satisfied. Glover & Busey are actors who would normally be "above" a project like this, but since they are here, they are putting in their full effort and it was appreciated. I liked how resilient and hard to kill the Predator was in this one, he did not succumb to a gimmick or blind luck. I really appreciated how adult-focused the film was and they did not shy away from extremities or graphicness.
Predator 2 is pretty great and that is coming from someone who had extremely low expectations for this. The fact the Predator is unmasked for the majority of it's scenes are the best thing about the film to me.
