Preliminary microphone test - Cascade V57 for close mic and voice over positioning dialogue test.
This is one of my preliminary tests that I do for testing out ideas for full YouTube videos. I sometimes share the prelim videos if they seem like they'd be useful to other people. In this video I'm testing a Cascade V57 large diaphragm studio cardioid condenser to see if it can be used in a very close mic voice over position.
The room I'm in has a very bright short reverb characteristic, noise from my computer and other devices and noise from a busy street via a window close by, all of which don't help for dialogue recording. This would be typical of most bedroom or home recording studios. I've tested a bunch of mics to see which one is suited to such close proximity and the V57 seems best on balance.
The idea is to get really close on top of the mic, basically eating it, so that my voice over powers the unwanted audio in the room. The best type of mic for this is a cardioid type with no rear lobe, which the Cascade is.
