Back to the VR Controller... Now I'm using pure Physics Forces for all the movement!
The character still moves based on head bob (real foot steps control the movement speed), but the motion is pushed by applying forces, so other objects can also push the character about.
The hands are tracked and then apply forces up to a maximum, ensuring that they accelerate fast enough to follow the tracked hand very closely, but still can't push heavy objects about easily.
The eventual intent for the hands is to have hand push also affect the character body, so you'd be able to physically grab ledges and pull up, with some extra fake lift forces to put you above where the hands are!
The game I intend to make is something similar to GMod, but at same time I'm considering developing the movement control far enough that I can make it available as an asset for any VR development, because it seems to work very naturally, even though I'm having to dodge wires all over the place and a pretty cramped play area about 2m^2 around me!
