So my curiosity got the better of me. Proteus is not exactly a game, more like a... situation? It's more like taking a walk to grandma on a Saturday afternoon (possibly while high), than it is the regular kind of puzzle solving / level grinding / moving target murdering that is other games. I quite enjoy puzzle solving / level grinding / moving target murdering, but sometimes one just wants to take a walk to grandma.

Proteus is a sea god shapeshifter, one of the oldest gods of Greek mythology. I'm telling you because the origins of words fascinate me, and Greek mythology is cool. From him comes the word "protean", which means something like "changing" or "versatile". I wonder if the Mass Effect protheans were named by humans? Otherwise Holy Inexplicable Coincidence Batman.

I guess I can see reasons why this game is called Proteus, but then again, with something as general as "versatile" I think you could use the name for almost anything. Even a rock can be versatile. You can drop it on people, throw it on people, sit on it, put it in fire to create a frying pan, dig shelter under it... yes yes, I'm done, go on your way.
