This is Socom 3 Liberation. Liberation was a Socom 2 download map. One of three DLC / downloadable maps for Socom 2 and one of the first ever downloadabe maps for the PlayStation 2. It required the purchase of an "HDD" Hard Disk Drive that was put in the back of the first generation big PlayStation 2 consoles.

You also had to buy the Official PlayStation Magazine / OPM in order to get the disc that had the map content on it and load that up onto the HDD. Three maps got released in total. The first map was Liberation and came with issue #88 / demo disc # 88. Last Bastion was #89, and The Official PlayStation Magazine #90 demo disc came with all three maps including After Hours. That was Socom 2.

Socom 3 came along and so did the Slim PlayStation 2. Socom 3 DLC only required a zip drive, thumb drive, flash drive, usb plug-in thing to download DLC maps onto. The HDD with its 32gb gigabits was not needed anymore. Socom 3 featured 3 sets of DLC. The HDD maps, and other Socom 1 & 2 maps each with three maps. So 9 DLC maps for Socom 3 / Socom: Combined Assault for a total of about 50 maps!!!

Socom 2 only had 1 mode for each map, except for a few that also had respawn suppression. Liberation in Socom 2 was an escort map. You had to get 3 VIPS / Hostages to the extraction point on the other side of the map. Later, Socom 3 added respawn and various other modes of play including demolition.

The map design features two big metal doors that could be opened and closed from the terrorist side or breached by the seals with explosives. The map is in the shape of a football with the outside street you see in this video that wraps around to each spawn point and there are intersecting alley ways in the middle and an alley way on the other side. Also there are a few stairways leading to second story spots, also the warehouse, the building overlooking the street by the terrorist target, and the market area with second story stairs. This was a very tuff map to play in Socom 2.

Either the seals would hide the VIPS and wait for the terrorists to come to them, or the seals would try to get to the extraction and come across terrorists waiting for them. Various other variations of gameplay strategy and individual players strategy would unfold. Including a single seal only taking 1 hostage, and leaving the rest to get killed or taking them all and heading off alone and getting them all killed. It was fun to watch players strategy when you had died to see how they camped, or if the terrorist would shoot the VIPs or the seals. Killing all three of the VIPs ended the round for a terrorist victory. You could not extract 1 vip so seals had to hide if 2 got killed if I remember correctly.

At the maps and modes core seals wanted to get the vips to the extraction, and terrorists wanted this to happen cause they could camp the map good and also got notified when an extraction was about to take place. In order for seals to win they had to navigate the map and the map had lots of ways terrorists could come up behind you. So sending a team of seals forward was important, and if they got killed you became the front line in protecting the vips and now you also had to watch behind you. Most of the time making seals hide. You had to be attentive to seals taking the street cause if they got killed terrorists would probaby be coming from behind. In the end you never were safe anywhere really. Grenades would go to the most common places and terrorists grenades would arrive before they did, eventhough the design of the map made it less likely for that to happen. As in going up to the roof a terrorist would get shot, but a sniper working a terrorist could snipe a seal who wanted to camp the roof stairs so endless strategy could unfold, and as always grenades payed a factor, but not as much as other maps. It was really a fun map, a challenging map, and a map I liked to play as a terrorist. And I never really liked playing as a terrorist cause of the weapons. But getting to and killing the vips while the seals broke down into the chaos was pure joy. If I remember correctly.
