ぷよぷよテトリス Puyo Puyo Tetris game modes
Available for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U (Both region locked) Sony PS3 and PS Vita (Both region free) Read more below.
In this game/video, there are seven game modes (I show eight, I'll explain in a second) The list is as followed -
Puyo Puyo - Plays by the Puyo Tsu rules
Tetris - Plays by the traditional holding and SRS rules
Puyo vs. Tetris - One field plays Puyo, while the other plays Tetris. I demonstrate both to show how vastly different each game plays against the other.
Puyo Tetris Mix - You'll be playing Puyo and Tetris together at the same time. You'll also have the opportunity to continue a chain, even after one has already started. You can also hard drop and hold Puyo pieces. This is the least favorite of mine.
Puyo Tetris Swap - You begin by either playing Puyo or Tetris. Every 25 seconds, the screen will switch to the other side to play the opposite game. Chains can continue on the other game if done immediately.
Party mode/Items match - A 2x2 pixel will appear in the bottom left corner containing an item. Either create a chain or break a line to activate that item. The new item will randomly appear on the field after activating the last one.
Big Bang - Consist of Puyo Fever rules, and a new mode called Tetris Lucky Attack. The aim is to create as many chains or line breaks in 60 seconds. Once time is up, the one who gathered more garbage will deplete your opponents health bar. It will continue in that order until ones health bar is depleted.
In addition to these modes, you have from Puyo; Fever Mode, Practice, and Mini Puyo Practice. And from Tetris; Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra (not shown in this video)
There is also a tutorial corner in case you are not familiar with either game to help better your gameplay.

My personal thoughts: This was a surprisingly well balanced collaboration. I had my doubts if you were playing Tetris and came across a wild player that could do 20 chains on Puyo, but it seems the damage is minimal if you know how to play correctly.
The music has Sega's fingerprints all over it. Even songs dedicated to Tetris has the cartoony jingle you'd expect from Puyo. Even so, they did a very good job capturing the essence from Tetris without it feeling out of place. There's a couple definitely worth sticking in my music library.
My only gripe is that Sega went cheap on this one. The engine and games soundtrack used in Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary was carried over into this game, and there's a lack of everything. Regular Puyo Puyo, SUN rules, vs. Fever Mode rules, and others are absent in this game. Tetris Company, aside from vs. at least has it's traditional Marathon and Sprint.
If Sega hadn't skimped out on its extra features, this could've been the ultimate collab. when it came down to the two biggest puzzle games in the world. Gotta leave it to Sega to ruin your experience, huh? Still miss you, Compile...
Also, in swap, it gets annoying real fast switching between Tetris' hard drop, and Puyo's soft drop. When it switches from Puyo to Tetris is easy enough, but the other way around really aggravates me. You can make it possible to hard drop under the additional rules settings, but still a pain to have to change it to that every time.
Aside from that, it has a three to five hour story campaign with plenty of challenges, online multiplayer, 24 playable characters, including six new characters, and everything you would expect from Puyo and Tetris separately. Combine makes for quite a experience to behold. If you're a fan of either series, definitely give it a shot~
Do note, my recording was lagging a little, so I could not play as fast. At normal framerates, I'm about par for playing Puyo, and a beast when it comes to Tetris.
