Polluted rivers, drains choked with garbage, and open defecation in today’s India are a far cry from the wisdom that was embedded in ancient India. Sahana Singh makes the case that the sanitation problems being faced in India today stem from a disconnect with old traditions and knowledge. Ancient Sanskrit texts encoded the principles, which could easily have been used to extract global best practices needed for healthy ecosystems in our planet. It is time to apply the Indic lenses to tackling the challenges of poor sanitation.

Sahana Singh is an author and commentator who specializes in water issues, Indic history and current affairs. She is Director at Indian History Awareness and Research (IHAR), a Houston-based think tank. Her articles have been published in Reader’s Digest, Washington Post, Straits Times, Discovery Channel Asia and other publications. She has recently published a book on the educational heritage of ancient India. Sahana is an avid traveller who likes to connect the dots across societies, civilizations and disciplines.
