Quake III: Arena is the third full-fledged installment of the popular FPS series , which revolutionized and changed the face of the genre forever . Developers from the id Software studio decided to move away from the current gameplay formula and focus entirely on the multiplayer mode. The game was released in 1999 on personal computers (Windows, Linux and Macintosh), and a year later it was also converted to the SEGA Dreamcast console. Plot Due to the nature of the production, the plot of Quake III: Arena has only been slightly scratched. In the game, we play the roles of the greatest warriors of all time, who, to the delight of the Vadrigar race, compete with each other on specially designed arenas.Arena does not differ significantly from what the previous installments of the series offered in multiplayer mode . The pace of the game here is much faster than in Quake II , although not as fast as in the first one. The players have at their disposal an arsenal of nine well-balanced weapons: Gauntlet, Machinegun, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun, Railgun, Plasma Gun and the powerful BFG 10K, reminiscent of a similar model from the Doom series . Weapons spawn at regular intervals at specific points on the map, and each is best suited to different gameplay conditions. In case of death, the player loses the currently owned weaponsand spawns with two random, relatively low-damage guns. Of course, the game also features power-ups typical of the series, which restore a certain amount of health or armor, increase movement speed or weapon strength for a while, as well as provide invisibility, the ability to teleport or fly, and even temporary immortality. One of the main innovations is the ability to earn various awards during the fight , awarded for spectacular actions, e.g. passing the map on one life or a certain number of hits or frags in a row. Game modes Unlike the previous installments of the series, Quake III: Arena focuses primarily on multiplayer gameplay . The available game modes include: Free for All (FFA) - a classic deathmatch in which each player fights for his own account, Team Deathmatch (TDM) - a team variant of FFA, Tournament - a duel between two players, and Capture the Flag - where the goal of two teams is to capture the opposing flag while defending their own. Depending on the game mode, up to 16 players can play at the same time. In Quake III: Arena we will also find a single-player option, i.e. a series of skirmishes with bots controlled by artificial intelligence . The game is divided into seven stages of increasing difficulty, and access to the next ones is obtained after completing all the maps on a given level. The whole thing is complemented by the skirmish mode, i.e. a skirmish with bots, in which we can freely modify the parameters of the game. Technical issues As in the case of id Software's earlier works, the visuals of Quake III: Arena are at a very high level (as for the late 1990s), although the next generation of id Tech 3's proprietary engine does not bring such great changes as in the two first parts of the series . The style of the maps, typical for the series, combining elements of Gothic and modern technology, remained unchanged. Compared to its predecessors, however, the whole is characterized by considerable minimalism and much more vivid colors. An undoubted advantage of Quake III is the traditionally open architecture of the game, allowing players to create their own modifications . Also worth mentioning is the excellent audio setting, with a voice-over commenting on the events in the arenas, and a truly energetic soundtrack, which this time included songs by Sonic Mayhem and Frontline Assembly.
