61Queen Dido of Carthage was a legendary figure who lived in the 9th century BCE. She was the daughter of the king of the Phoenician city-state of Tyre. She fled her ruthless and autocratic brother Pygmalion after discovering that he was responsible for her husband’s death. She then purchased from a local chieftain, Iarbas, a piece of land on which she founded Carthage. Most of the information about Queen Dido comes from ancient Greek and Roman sources. According to legend, she fell in love with Aeneas, a Trojan prince who had fled his homeland after the fall of Troy. Their story is told in Virgil’s Aeneid. Their love affair was short-lived, however, as Aeneas left Carthage to fulfill his destiny as the founder of Rome. Larbas then demanded marriage with Dido threatening to wage war on Carthage, but the legendary queen ascended a funerary pyre and sacrificed herself.
