In this video I answer 3 questions from people who have subscribed to my website asking about issues related to personality disorders.
The purpose of this video is to provide answers and suggestions to individuals with traits or a personality disorder, or to help a loved one with traits or a personality disorder.
The following are suggestions from Dr. Fox and not an indication of a therapeutic relationship with those posing questions.
All questions were submitted with the understanding that the question would be read and answered in an open forum, YouTube, for others to see and benefit from. Their identities are obscured.
Question #1: Megan asks, "I would love to know some BPD coping strategies for dealing with a romantic breakup and the intense abandonment anxiety & despair that follows".
Question #2: Dave asks, "I have strong narcissistic tendencies and am just starting to get therapy for NPD. My ex has PTSD from our relationship, and for financial / emotional support reasons we are still in close touch. I think that our relationship brought out some borderline tendencies out in her, and her life has become progressively more challenged and less functional. What should I be doing to support her and how can we get out of this mess?"
Question #3: Grace asks, "I am older now, as a little child and adolescent, standing up for myself in the face of abuse was associated with being ignored or an escalation of abuse. I have since learned that when I assert a value or an opinion that reflects me in a hostile or conflict situation, I feel like I am dying and disappearing inside. I keep thinking that I need to speak up for myself (not in an outburst) have you guidance about managing the "after effects" of doing this. As an older person, and I have read that BPD symptoms can modify with age - or is it just that we are more alone and the process of avoiding triggers has left us isolated. Where is the balance and how to find it?"
