A brief sample of the graphics appearing in early versions of PC Doom II map 31, Wolfenstein.

The original 1994 version of this map featured enemies and images similar to those found in id Software's earlier game, Wolfenstein 3D ('Wolf 3D'). This Doom II map was changed in some later releases and ports, deleting the Wolf 3D images and replacing those soldiers with standard Doom / Doom II enemies. In January 2020, these changes have been partially reversed in an update to Bethesda's Doom II ports across many devices. The 'Wolf 3D'-type soldiers have returned, and images now used are reminiscent of, but not identical to, those used in Wolf 3D or the original PC version of Doom II. Also, in some post-1990s classic Doom/Doom II ports, the 'red cross' symbol originally appearing on various health items was replaced with a pill-like symbol. In the January 2020 update, that pill image has been replaced with a green cross.
