Normally, you would wait until the Post Office is open, and give the package or packages to a Post Office clerk. You have to wait in line, and sometimes the line can be very long. For some reason, a lot of people don't use kiosks to get simple tasks done like this. If you use the kiosk, you can save a lot of time.
I send a lot of packages, because I do a lot of e-commerce, and I also send packages to my friends who live in other states.
