Re-Extending 'Friends'
Final product sample (different episode): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n5Bf54bdC0
For those who don't know, the Region 1 DVDs of Friends are extended versions. The Blu-Rays, Netflix, DVD Region 2 (except The Finale) are the shorter versions that were originally broadcast on TV. I am trying to Re-Extend the Blu-ray versions so they contain the Region 1 DVD exclusive footage.
The results are not perfect, as the Blu-rays are vastly superior quality. The DVDs are honestly really bad quality. To make the jumps between versions less obvious, you could crop the 16:9 blu-rays to 4:3, but I still think the difference in colors and sharpness would be significant. Sure you could color correct, but honestly, this is good enough for me.
- I made a mistake in the scene where Phoebe imitates Leia's hair, where both DVD and BR footage was shown: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60071552/screenshots/vlcsnap-error836.png --- I fixed it afterwards
- This video does not show me ripping the DVDs & Blu-Rays, deinterlacing the DVD and extracting the H264 stream out of the blu-ray. It also doesn't show me exporting the video out of Premiere, and muxing it with the original AC3 track from the DVD. It also doesn't show me re-syncing the Swedish subtitle and adding the extra DVD lines to it.
- I will probably not do every episode. I will probably only do the episodes where big chunks of sub-plots where cut out (Rachel eating alone at a restaurant, Phoebe taking headache medicine, etc.). The reason I did it on this episode was because I only have S3 DVD available right now.
- I am very new to Premiere Pro so it is possible I am doing things very wrong. I only had this program for 2 days and this is the 3rd episode I have Re-Extended.
- I cannot share the final re-extended episode with you. I will not send it over the internet. Originally my plan was to do all this with a bunch of ffmpeg command line scripts, that would allow you to just download the script and input the DVD and Blu-Ray episode and the script would generate the Re-Extended episode. Sadly, keyframes stopped this plan, and it would also be really annoying for me to do it that way (doing it in Premiere is much easier as I can easily see both versions simultaneously and move them around)
- The music in the background is the Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis) soundtrack.
- The video is spedup 400%. I think you can set Youtube playback speed to 0.25 and you will get realtime.
