๐๏ธ๐ฌ๐ท๐ Ready to discover the fascinating story behind Lakes Zerelia โ
Located in the Prefecture of Magnesia, very close to Almyros, Lakes Zerelia are two circular lakes with a unique origin. Initially thought to be of volcanic origin, researchers Evangelos Lagios and Dietrich Volker discovered that these lakes were actually created by a meteor impacting the Earth during the Holocene era, estimated between 12,500 and 8,000 years ago.
Surrounded by archaeological intrigue, these lakes also serve as a sanctuary for various bird species, including white storks, mallards, and moorhens. The larger lake, spanning 42 hectares, and the smaller one, covering 25 acres, offer tranquil waters for exploration.
Archaeological excavations in the wider area have revealed traces of habitation dating back to the Bronze Age, with significant discoveries by Dutch and British archaeologists in the early 20th century. Today, these lakes stand as the only lakes in Greece created by falling meteorites, adding to their mystique and allure.
