At least we converted the phono input to a line in, so all was not lost.

If you want to do the same to your GF-9696, find C111 and C112 on the board (by the phono switch), cut or desolder the blue and purple wires going into them. Then run wires from the positive leg of C111 and C112 to the RCA plugs of the phono jack. This turns the phono input into a normal line level input by bypassing the RIAA amplifier.
