Recycling rates in Brighton and Hove fall again - why are we so rubbish at it?
0Recycling rates in Brighton and Hove have fallen again.
A report published by Brighton and Hove City Council said that the "percentage of household waste sent for reuse, recycling and composting" stood at 25.6 per cent - down from 26.4 per cent a year ago.
The figure is way below the city's target of 32 per cent and the national average of 43%.
The figures, in the council's Annual Performance Update 2013-14, will not have been helped by the binmen's strike last year.
Labour councillors called for a review of the communal recycling service, adding that in 2008-09 almost 30 per cent of household rubbish was recycled.
But Green leaders maintained the changes and incentives recently introduced would help push the figures in the right direction.
