Thousands of public sector workers took to Brighton and Hove's streets today (Thursday 10 July) as part of a national day of action.

Public sector unions have called national strikes affecting civil servants, teachers, council staff and firefighters.

The disputes revolve around pay, pensions and workloads. Most of those who are striking have had pay freezes or below inflation pay rise for the past few years.

Paul Maloney, regional secretary of the GMB, said that a fair wage for the lowest paid would be about £10 an hour.

But Graham Cox, a Conservative on Brighton and Hove City Council, said the only way any salary increases could be funded would be through making staff redundant.
