Red Alert // MS-DOS VS WINDOWS 95 (1996)

Hey retrogamers!

In today’s episode, I am going to compare two pc versions of Red Alert. Even though, they were released as one package, one was made for the MS-DOS and the other for the Windows 95.

I’m not sure if you are aware but these versions are actually quite a different. With different I mean they do look different when in the game - graphics, resolution - but also intro videos and cut-scenes have totally different quality. One would say that we should definitely go with Windows 95 version because of the in game graphics quality but is it actually that clear?

So the question is, which version of Red Alert should we actually play?

In this video I am going to show you both versions side by side. I am going to demonstrate the intros and also the first mission of Soviet campaign. But enough talking, let’s get down to business.

First thing you will notice, intro and the main menu look nearly identical. Windows version looks a bit more colorful and has better contrast, but no big difference.

However, to my great surprise, videos actually do look better in the MS-DOS version. Is it just me but scanlines do not work in this game. Did it look better in the old monitor?

But lets enjoy this cool video and some trailers of the other great games at the time, such as Lands of Lore and Blade Runner, before I come back to an actual in game footage.

Oh yeah, more intro. And I just love how it looks in the MS-DOS version.

The actual game is where Windows version destroys the MS-DOS!

Just look at the difference! I wish I could play windows version with MS-DOS version cut-scenes! Let me know in the comments, which version would you play!

So there you go. These were Red Alert versions released for the PC.
