Take a left before the volcano as you would have done when getting the 8 red coins. Dispose of the Mr. I by running in circles around him then fall into the pit he guarded. You will warp to an island with a Wing Cap Block. If you have unlocked the Wing Cap then grab it and fly over to the star, bypassing the log altogether.
